Dentistry is a fast-paced world, and there’s a new type of brush that’s just entered the market known as “Silver Care” or NANO Silver toothbrushes. For this blog, we’ll detail everything you need to know about these silver ion toothbrushes.
While they may look like run of the mill soft-bristle toothbrushes, silver brushes are unique in that their brush heads contain small amounts of silver – but its not just there to bedazzle the brush. When exposed to oxygen and water, silver releases bursts of silver ions, which are deadly to bacteria, fungi, and viruses. These ions travel down the bristles of the toothbrush, killing bacteria that they find in their way. This means that silver brushes come with two distinct advantages: they’re antibacterial while brushing, so they’ll go another step towards cleaning your mouth, and they’re self sanitizing, so they’re less likely to get dirty as quickly. With that said, it’s important to note that, much like any other toothbrush, silver ion toothbrushes also need to be replaced after a 5-6 months of usage. The self-cleaning aspect is in fact finite, and while useful for a while, do not offer unlimited cleaning. Bristles also can bend after extensive use, so be sure to check the brush regularly, the same as you would for any normal toothbrush.
